Town Cats was started in 1992 in an attempt to deal with the feral cat population of Ocean City, Maryland.  When they went home in the fall, many summer visitors left their cats behind to face the winter without food or shelter.  Those that survived would inevitably breed in the spring, producing litters of feral kittens that would eventually produce more unwanted kittens.  A small group of volunteers was organized to provide these cats with food, shelter and above all, to spay/neuter and vaccinate.

Working with feral cats is not easy.  They are not adoptable and most shelters won’t take them in.  When there are too many complaints about them,  Animal Control will sweep in, round them up and immediately put them down.  We are the only group in Worcester County working with ferals and we are committed to protecting them and improving their lives in every way we can.  As an associate of Alley Cat Allies, we follow their system of trap, neuter, return.  (TNR).

Town Cats primary goal is to spay/neuter the feral cats we work with.  In this way we humanely prevent litters of feral kittens who grow up to endlessly repeat the reproductive cycle.  We work closely with veterinarians who accept our cats for spaying/neutering as soon as they are trapped.  Handling feral cats requires a special expertise and our vets are pros!
